Mobile Phone Recycling
The first part of any recycling process is reuse, just like we're encouraged to
reuse our plastic carrier bags envirofone.com will try, wherever possible, to
ensure your mobile phone is reused. When we receive your old mobile phones the
first thing we do is test them to ensure that the old mobile phones are working correctly.
We then grade the mobiles as to whether they can be re-used immediately, require
minor refurbishment or are not suitable for reuse and need to be recycled.
After testing and grading of the mobile phones has taken place we send you
the appropriate payment (either a cheque or Argos card) and the working and
refurbished mobile phones are placed in our stock to be sold. Mobile phones which
are not suitable for reuse are sent to be reprocessed. The reprocessor recovers
any valuable components such as flash memory, plastics and metals. Any remaining
component materials are smelted for energy recovery.
We're very pleased that the majority of the mobile phones that we receive are
re-used as this can make a significant contribution to managing the demand for
precious minerals such as coltan which is sourced from the deep forests of the
Congo in central Africa. The Congo's mining business has in recent years led
to a dramatic reduction of animal habitat, specifically the world's endangered
lowland gorillas and reuse and recycling can help to reduce the demand for
new raw materials.
Our Environmental Credentials
